On my way. See you in a few.

Mace ran his finger over the screen of the phone after reading Gabe’s latest text. He pocketed the cell then picked up the snacks he’d prepared to take to the living room then set them on the table. Mace hurried back to the kitchen and opened the oven to check on the chicken. It would be ready when Gabe arrived. They would have lunch then watch the race. He straightened, closing the oven door, then rubbed his hands down the sides of his jeans. He shook out his fingers and paced. Nervousness was not needed in this situation. It was just two friends hanging out to eat, watch TV and relax. Fun, laughing and food—nothing more. The doorbell rang and Mace jumped. He rolled his head, blew out a breath then clenched and unclenched his hands.

Calmly, he walked to the front door and opened it. Gabe’s deep brown gaze was the first thing he noticed—his eyes were warm and gentle as well as his expression, but it also had something more he couldn’t identify. He glanced at his clothing—a pale grey T-shirt and dark brown sweats, while on his feet were open-toed sandals.

“Come on in, Gabe.” Mace stepped back and Gabe entered.

“Hey, Mace.” Gabe held up the bag he held with the logo and words for Westfall Games and Teasers on it. “I have something for you and Susan.”

“Thanks. Mum isn’t here—she’s spending the day at one of her retiree group’s home. They are having a barbecue. I think it’s another planning session for their group at the community centre. At least now Mum works there and has agreed to tell Duncan first.” Mace rubbed his hands against the side of his jeans. He was afraid to reach for the bag—he didn’t know if his control was strong enough if their hands touched. “Put it there. I’ll look at it later.” He pointed to the side table by the couch and Gabe put it down. “Ready for lunch?” Mace asked as he walked towards the kitchen.

“Sure,” Gabe said following him.

Mace stopped by the stove and breathed in and out. Gabe looked so good. Mace’s hand shook as he reached out and turned off the oven then checked the burners of the stove.

Control. Friends having lunch, watching the race and relaxing, he reminded himself.

“Mace… Are you okay?” Gabe asked, touching his back.

The touch coupled with Gabe’s voice made him shudder. Mace turned and smiled.

“Yes.” He grabbed the front of Gabe’s T-shirt and pulled him down to him. Mace kissed him working his mouth to open Gabe’s and Gabe stiffened. Mace stroked his tongue into Gabe’s mouth. Lost in his taste, it took Mace a few moments to realise that he wasn’t returning his kiss. Mace withdrew and stepped back. Gabe stopped him, sliding his hands around his waist.

“I didn’t me—”

“You better damn well had meant to,” Gabe growled.

“But… You didn’t return it. You don’t want me.” Mace was humiliated.

“Wrong. I want you all right, but I want to know what changed between now and a few days ago.
